Bad Moon Rising: Friday 13th - Unlucky? Where did that come from?

Creedence Clearwater Revival – Bad Moon Rising Lyrics

I see a bad moon rising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today.

Don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

I hear hurricanes a blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.

Well don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.

Well don't go around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Don't come around tonight,
Well it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

Friday 13th 2016 is the only Friday 13th this year, so at midnight tonight we can all breathe a sigh of relief, especially as it falls on a full moon! But do we really need to be worried by the superstition surrounding both these events?

As far as the full moon is concerned, if you speak to any nurse, doctor or carer in the mental health sector, they will tell you that their patients are inexplicably disturbed on the nights of the full moon. Police officers will also confirm that they are kept on their toes at this time with a significant increase in crime, especially violent crime. Fiction and Hollywood have done their share to add to this phenomena too, with Werewolves on the rampage on the full moon.

Full moons, blood moons, bad moons, all are grist to the mill of writers and songwriters as we see above. (One of my favourite songs of all time by the way  Love CCR)

But what about Friday 13th? The source of this superstition is varied depending on who you talk to. Some say that Friday 13th has always been unlucky due to its conection with Christ's Last Supper. He was crucified on a Friday and there were 13 present at the last supper.

Knights Templar historians will tell you it originated after the the Knights Templar were the victims of mass arrests at dawn on Friday, 13 October 1307 (a date sometimes linked with the origin of the Friday the 13th superstition). King Philip IV ordered de Molay and scores of other French Templars to be simultaneously arrested. The arrest warrant started with the phrase: "Dieu n'est pas content, nous avons des ennemis de la foi dans le Royaume" ["God is not pleased. We have enemies of the faith in the kingdom"]

Others may tell you that the number thirteen is considered unlucky due the fact that traditionally there are thirteen witches in a coven.  Hotels often ignore 13 on room numbers, floor thirteen in a high rise building is often labelled floor 14.

So, you may want to stay home tonight, just to be on the safe side. Oh, and don't answer the door!

Back soon ....
